03/16/12

Barclaycard US announced a new internship program with Delaware State University (DSU) at a briefing March 16.

Barclays is creating the program with Delaware State University in which DSU students will be selected each year to serve as paid interns.  This year, six students were selected to work in the Credit Risk organization with mentors, earning experience in gathering data, conducting analysis and working on teams.

Amer Sajed provided details of the new program.  "The internship program represents a fantastic way to get real work experience to set these students up to succeed in the future," he said.  "This program is what makes Barclays different in Delaware.  It\'s a win-win for all involved."

The partnership between Barclaycard US and DSU is historic, said Dr. Harry L. Williams, president of Delaware State University.  "We are very proud that a major company agreed to provide our students with this type of support."

Dr. Williams was followed by U.S. Senator Tom Carper who also praised the program and the Barclaycard US mentors.

Carmen Mikhaiel, a mentee, spoke next.  "The internship helps students to attain academic achievement in the classroom and increase our drive to graduate," she said.  "Additionally, in the business world, it is great for networking and it boosts our resume - which is an advantage after graduation when we go into the work force."

U.S. Senator Chris Coons also gave remarks on the program.  "It is very important for area employers to support our educational institutions," he said.  "This is a model of what a public/private partnership should be about."
