Community Involvement

We are committed to responsible corporate citizenship. Our community outreach programs focus on teaching life skills. If we provide the people in our communities with skills and tools, we are ultimately helping them toward self-empowerment.

So we’ve connected with community outreach programs that focus on teaching life management skills, primarily to young children and adolescents.

Using sweat equity and creativity, we have had a significant impact on these organizations. Over 97 percent of our employees volunteered at least once last year. In addition, our employees are able to volunteer four hours each month on company time.

Our focus is on six local non-profit groups:
Thomas Edison Charter School
YWCA
West End Neighborhood House
East Side Charter School
The Mary Campbell Center
Children’s Literacy Center-CO

In addition, we have a series of financial education courses, and a program to help the Life Line Teens (ages 18-21) individually with their financial needs.

In 2001, Barclays established a business that collects used or slightly damaged new furniture to donate to those in need. To date, we have helped more than 280 families, including victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.

Thomas Edison School partners with school districts, charter boards, and states to raise student achievement and educational outcomes through its research-based school design and curriculum, achievement management solutions, professional development, and extended learning programs. The Thomas Edison Charter School has been in operation since 2000. It serves students in first through eighth grades.

Barclaycard volunteers mentor students and coordinate two large events per year for the students: a holiday party and an end-of-the-year party.

The YWCA Home Life Center is a shelter for homeless families. It is a place to live while the YWCA teaches life skills in order to become an independent family.

Barclaycard US volunteers teach budgeting, credit, and legal topics. They also conduct quarterly activity nights at the homeless shelter to entertain 20 to 30 children while the parents attend classes. The childrens' activities include simple traditions most children take for granted, such as dyeing Easter eggs, carving pumpkins, and decorating a Christmas tree.

The West End Neighborhood House Life Lines Teen Program strives to improve the quality of life for emancipated foster care youth by providing educational, housing, employment, counseling, financial, and case management support services to complement their own efforts in transitioning to healthy, independent adult living.

The West End Neighborhood House is a community center that has served Wilmington more than 121 years.

Barclaycard US assists by furnishing houses, teaching budget, credit, and interview classes; designing their Web site; supplying mentors; and giving holiday parties and gifts.

East Side Charter School (ESCS) is an independent, tax exempt, non-profit 501(c) (3) urban public charter school. Located in the heart of the East Lake community, this elementary school is the first charter school in the country to be founded with the assistance of, and located within, a public housing authority’s property. It is also the oldest charter school in the state. Eighty-five percent of families are at or below the poverty level, and 95 percent of the students are from single-parent homes.

ESCS’ mission mandates that “every child will learn” despite the impoverished demographics the school serves. Every child receives individualized attention.

Barclaycard US volunteers mentor ESCS students weekly. Volunteers have also helped paint and clean classrooms, organized field trips, and given holiday parties and gifts.

The Mary Campbell Center is a community of persons with disabilities. Each resident at The Mary Campbell Center has a program that is unique and that addresses individual needs and personal goals. The center is completely accessible to persons with physical disabilities and is attractive and comfortable for the 65 residents living there.

Barclaycard US volunteers have the opportunity to help in a variety of ways, including reading to residents, participating in recreational trips with residents, helping with Special Olympics, adopting a resident for Christmas, and assisting with computer classes.

The Children’s Literacy Center began as a Junior League project in 1991. It has since evolved into a statewide and national effort serving more than 1,500 students annually.

Tutors are community volunteers who help children struggling with reading. The Peak Reader program addresses today’s important educational issues– student achievement, school accountability, and the meeting of state standards and National Literacy Strategies.

Barclaycard US volunteers are mentoring these deserving children.
